What I have been reading March 2021

Only two books this month. I am back to working in the office and I don’t seem to have as much time to spend reading as I am up at 5.15am to get to work for 7.00am. That means I am going to bed earlier. When I was working at home, I could get up later and stay up later reading before I went to sleep.

Mrs Miniver

Shortly before the Second World War, a column by 'Mrs Miniver' appeared in
THE TIMES, the first of many recounting the everyday events of a middle-class Chelsea family: Mrs Miniver's thrill at the sight of October chrysanthemums; her sense of doom when the faithful but rackety car is replaced; the escapades of Vin, Toby and Judy, her unpredictable young children; visits to the Kent cottage and, as war becomes a reality, the strange experience of acquiring gas masks and the camaraderie of those unsettling early days.

Mrs Miniver enchanted the public with her sympathy and affectionate humour, capturing ordinary lives and values now darkened by war.  Source Amazon.co.uk

I decided to read this book after hearing it mentioned several times both in Alison May’s blog Brocantehome and in the comments left by her readers.

I have to say this has now become one of my favourite books. I loved everything about it. The way the author has described such simple things like fireworks strikes a chord and you can clearly visualize what is being written. Unlike a lot of books where I feel as though I am only skimming over the words, in this book I read and took in every word. Mrs Miniver also described her reactions and opinions to certain situations and I found that I felt that it described perfectly how I feel and think about similar things that are happening now. I ended up putting lots of page tags on different pages as I did not want to deface the book by highlighting things that really stood out for me.

Where the Crawdads Sing

For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet fishing village. Kya Clark is barefoot and wild; unfit for polite society. So in late 1969, when the popular Chase Andrews is found dead, locals immediately suspect her.

But Kya is not what they say. A born naturalist with just one day of school, she takes life's lessons from the land, learning the real ways of the world from the dishonest signals of fireflies. But while she has the skills to live in solitude forever, the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. Drawn to two young men from town, who are each intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world–until the unthinkable happens.

This was the book club choice for the month. I thought the story started out well and I felt sorry for Kya being abandoned and left to fend for herself at such a young age, however as the story continued I felt that the way the character developed was unbelievable in what she accomplished considering her background.

Despite that I was enjoying the story up until the end of the court room drama. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but after that point I felt that the story was rushed to get an ending and some areas needed more explanation especially with regards to Kya’s character which came out at the end.

Unlike Mrs Miniver where I read every word there were areas in this book that I definitely skimmed over. If my copy of the story had been physical rather than digital then I would have put this on the pile to donate to the charity shop.

Happy Homemaker Monday 29th March 2021

It has been a pretty quiet week. Emma's room is now finished and she is happy and so am I now that I have my craft room back. I am looking forward to being able to have the space to get my sewing machine out and to attempt to make some new clothes.

The Weather

Turning mild for the first part of the week and then cooling down just in time for Easter Weekend.

On the Menu

Monday  - Lancashire Hotpot and Mushy peas
Tuesday - Tacos
Wednesday - Cheesy tomato pasta and Garlic bread
Thursday - Calzone
Friday - Veggie burgers, coleslaw and salad
Saturday -Shredded buffalo chicken
Sunday -Picnic

Looking forward to

Now restrictions have started to lift I am looking forward to seeing my parents on Easter Sunday, especially as it coincides with it being my Dad's birthday. We are planning on going to Rivington Pike with my sister and going for a walk up to the tower and having a picnic, then going to Mum and Dad's and seeing them and chatting in the garden.

What I have been watching.

I seem to have very little say in what we watch, mainly because I am not overly bothered. We only have the one TV and as I have many other things to be getting on with my husband has control of the remote. When I do get hold of it I have been watching 'The Queen's Gambit' on Netflix. I am not at all interested in chess but I have enjoyed the story and seeing how Beth has coped with her addiction and being on her own for most of her young life. She reminded me of Kya in 'Where the Crawdads Sing'. They both have overcome adversity and achieved fame and notoriety in their respective fields.

When I just want something to watch that I don't want to think too much about, then I watch 'Schitts Creek'. I don't find it particularly funny as in laugh out loud but I find it helps me relax.

Happy Homemaker Monday 22nd March 2021

I am finding the weeks are flying by even though we are not able to go anywhere or see anyone. All I am doing is going to work, coming home and walking the dog. I am so looking forward to the end of March when we can go to outdoor spaces, somewhere different to walk the dog. We try to go to different places to walk the dog but with the 'stay home' order we are all getting bored walking the same routes as there are not many places where we can let the dog off the lead to play. We have plenty of choices when we can travel even 5 miles further.

Craig and I have both had our first vaccinations against COVID. We both were given the Astra Zeneca jab on a Friday. On the Saturday morning we both woke with headaches and as the day progressed I developed the chills but by the Sunday morning we were both fine. The area we live in is speeding ahead with the schedule as I wasn't expected to be called for another month based on what was happening with work colleagues who live in different NHS areas.

The weather

Rather overcast but feeling a little warmer as we are consistently in double figures (10-12 degrees C). It makes the dog walks feel a lot pleasanter.

On my reading pile.

Mrs Miniver- Jan Struthers

Where the Crawdads Sing - Delia Owens. I need to finish this by Friday for my W.I. book club and according to my Kindle I still have 4 hours left to read.

On the Menu Plan

Monday - Shredded duck with pancakes. dim sum, spring rolls and samosas (We went to the Chinese supermarket a couple of weeks ago and stocked up)

Tuesday- Haddock Fish cakes. chips and peas

Wednesday - Chicken Parmigana

Thursday - Toasties

Friday -Spaghetti Carbonara

Saturday - Takeaway from a local Mediterranean restaurant

Sunday - Pulled pork with coleslaw and fries

Around the house

Emma's room has been redecorated with the fitted wardrobes removed, ceiling replastered, walls painted and this week the new carpet so all her furniture has been put mainly in my craft room and Craig's office. I am looking forward to her room being finished so the craft room looks less like a hoarders paradise, especially as it is at the front of the house and people walking past can see in.

The garden still needs some serious attention especially the borders.

No photos this week as I have not taken any except of Emma's room which I will show once it has been finished.

I am linking up with Sandra at Diary of a Stay at Home Mom and also reading what the other bloggers who link up have been doing.

Enjoy your week.

Knitting Fail

I have messed up on the baby cardigan I was knitting for my niece. This was a new pattern to me and the third time I had made a cardigan.  The pattern was easy to follow but I started to have concerns when it came to the armhole shaping as it was only 3 rows of decreases before casting off. The other 2 cardigans I had made had a lot more rows involved.

I attempted to sew the arms in according to the pattern but it did not look right. I unpicked it and tried again with the same result. I even took it to my Mum and she had a look and was surprised with the number of rows for the armhole shaping. She had a look at what I had done to see if I had gone wrong but she couldn't see anything.

The only mistakes I had made was not putting in enough buttonholes and the neck pieces were too long as it just said to knit until the length would fit halfway around the back of the neck.

I have decided to not finish sewing it up and I will use the other baby cardigan pattern instead. As the baby is not due until June I still have time to knit it.

As for the pattern I was following for this learning experience (not failure) I have put it in the recycling bin so that I am not tempted to try it again.

Happy Homemaker Monday 15th March 2021

I cannot believe how quickly time is passing. It was Thursday last week before I realised I had not posted for Happy Homemaker Monday. I can't say that I have been particularly busy or doing anything constructive either. I had my menu plan written and followed it for the week until yesterday as it was Mothers Day in the UK and my daughter offered to cook dinner for us all. I let her decide what she wanted to make and she chose a pasta dish which was very nice, I am not going to have any luck getting anyone else to cook this week so I decided to keep it simple.

On the menu this week

Monday -Chicken and leeks in a blue cheese sauce

Tuesday -Cajun Dirty Rice

Wednesday -Jacket potato and BBQ beans

Thursday - Hunters Chicken

Friday -Burgers with Salt and pepper chips

Saturday - Cheesy melt in the middle Haddock Fish cakes, boiled new potatoes and peas

Sunday  Pulled pork with coleslaw and fries

The weather

After a wintry wet week next week is forecast to just have light cloud with sunny intervals and a gentle breeze with temperatures of about 53 fahrenheit (11 celsius).  I hope this means I can get into the garden as I have bought a little growhouse that needs building and some bulbs panting.

Around the house

We are redecorating Emma's bedroom. The fitted wardrobes have been taken out and last weekend we had a plasterer covering the artex on the ceiling and down to the picture rail. This means that the room is empty and the contents are currently in my craft room which I have found frustrating as I have not been able to get access to a lot of my equipment. I had taken out the quilt and the blanket I am working on as I can sit in any chair and work on them.

We are waiting for the plaster to dry so that hopefully next weekend it can be redecorated and then a new carpet put in. Emma is going to have to wait until Ikea opens to get the wardrobe and drawers she wants but at least I will be able to get back in my craft room.

From the camera

As England is still in lockdown we aren't able to really go out and do anything, Walking the dog has been about the only thing we have been doing and we took a walk along the canal bank near where we live. We walked to an area that even though it is in a very urban area has retained a village feel and also a bit closer to home is a lighthouse that is nowhere near the sea but certainly make a striking landmark and conversation point for visitors.

On my crafting pile

I am still working on the courthouse steps knitted blanket and have done a couple more squares to complete the next row. The baby cardigan I will talk about later in the week. I haven't touched the quilt or either cross stitch.
Now the days are getting longer I am getting in the mood to do some more dressmaking. I have cut out the pattern and fabric for a top that I could wear for work that is a beginners pattern but as I cannot easily get to my sewing machine that is about all I can do on that for the moment.

I am looking forward to being able to go to the fabric shop in a month's time and choose lots of fabric for all the different items I want to make.

Linking up as usual with Sandra over at Diary of a Stay at Home Mom.

Wishing you all a good week.

What I have been Reading - February 2021

Such a Fun Age -Kiley Reid

In the midst of a family crisis one late evening, white blogger Alix Chamberlain calls her African American babysitter, Emira, asking her to take toddler Briar to the local market for distraction. There, the security guard accuses Emira of kidnapping Briar, and Alix's efforts to right the situation turn out to be good intentions selfishly mismanaged.

This book covers race, wealth, privilege and class. It also looks at the impact of social media and ‘wokeness’.

I felt that Emira was targeted for ‘saving’ by both Alix and Kelley but in different ways. That was probably because it looked like Emira was drifting through her life and had no real goals as is expected of most people nowadays. Emira though is not concerned about goals, she just wants the security of health insurance and enough money to cover her bills. She is good at what she does and it is obvious that she loves Briar and can see how Alix overlooks Briar for Catherine. Ultimately she stays true to herself and does what she wants even though other people want her to do more.

Alix and Kelley have very different backgrounds (even though they know each other) and different reasons for doing what they. I do feel that they both have issues with people of different races. I feel that Alix wants to protect them whilst Kelley wants to make it obvious that he is seen as not being racist and is ‘woke’ by generally only befriending African Americans, both male and female.

The story doesn’t have a true ending. The main storyline is wrapped up and then everyone just gets on with their lives.

The story was ok but it is one that I probably wouldn’t read again. I doubt I would have read it if it hadn’t been the book club choice.

Just My Luck – Adele Parks.

It’s the stuff dreams are made of – a lottery win so big, it changes everything.

For fifteen years, Lexi and Jake have played the same six numbers with their friends, the Pearsons and the Heathcotes. Over dinner parties, fish & chip suppers and summer barbecues, they’ve discussed the important stuff – the kids, marriages, jobs and houses – and they’ve laughed off their disappointment when they failed to win anything more than a tenner.

But then, one Saturday night, the unthinkable happens. There’s a rift in the group. Someone doesn’t tell the truth. And soon after, six numbers come up which change everything forever.

Lexi and Jake have a ticket worth £18 million. And their friends are determined to claim a share of it.

I heard about this book from a radio advert and as somebody who has often dreamt of winning the lottery this caught my attention. However, this book is a cautionary tale of how people can change once they do.

The story is told predominantly from 3 characters point of view – Lexi, Jake and their daughter Emily. It starts off with probably what everyone would do when they first win, go on a spending spree and it was hard to see which way the story would go. However, darker traits of characters appear and I found that I really disliked Jake and could not understand how he could do what he ended up doing. Lexi was the character I could most relate to, from her frustration at Jake’s spending without any thought, to her wanting to help other people as they are things  I would worry about if I suddenly won a huge amount of money.

I don’t know how I expected the story to develop when I bought the book but I certainly did not expect it to take the direction it took. I was expecting more of a battle with the friends wanting their share.

I also did not understand the last chapter. It tells a different story to the one that we have been led to believe.

Little Women – Louisa May Alcott.

This is a classic book and I am ashamed to say that I have never until now been inclined to read it. It wasn’t until I watched the film version (with Emma Watson) that I felt that I wanted to give it a go. I am not going to do the ‘blurb’ as everybody knows what the story, but after watching the film and the episode of ‘Friends’ when Joey is upset about Beth dying, I was surprised when the book ended at Meg’s wedding. After doing some research it turns out Little Women is often sold as Little Women and Good Wives combined. My copy from Vintage Classics (the cover is the one above) is not one of those.

The story embraces all the aspects of life I love and and strive for – family, happiness, thankfulness, genuineness, respect, love, honesty and kindness, and there are few stories published nowadays that cover all these elements as well. I like the fact that the book does go into more minute detail about the girls which is something that is not possible to do in a film. I was surprised at how young the sisters were in the book as the film gave me the impression that, with the exception of Amy, they were in their early twenties (Meg & Jo) or late teens (Beth), especially with Meg getting married.

It is obviously the book I have most enjoyed reading this month and I will be searching out a copy of Good Wives to continue reading about the March sisters.

Happy Homemaker Monday week commencing 1st March 2021

I cannot believe it is the 1st March already. How quickly this year is going so far. I suppose in a way that is a good thing with all the restrictions here in the UK. I think everybody is looking forward to June 21st when it is hoped that all restrictions are going to be lifted. I have my first Covid vaccination booked for Friday. The NHS Trust where I live seem to be getting through people very quickly and have now opened appointments up for people over 50 as well as those with underlying health conditions below 50. As I have just gone into that age bracket I went ahead and booked and told my husband to do get his booked as well. I admit I am glad that I now have a date, but I do feel sorry for those others who are older than I am in different Trust areas who are still waiting.

 On the menu this week

I am trying some new meals this week from the latest recipe book from Pinch of Nom. They started off with just a blog but have been so successful with their slimming conscious recipes that they now have 3 recipe books and 2 meal planners published. Unlike a lot of other ‘diet’ recipe books these books are not aimed or endorsed at any particular slimming programme and I have found that I enjoy these recipes more than any official ones from Slimming World or Weight Watchers.

Mon- Chicken Stir Fry with noodles

Tues – Mexican Street Corn Soup (No, not a spelling mistake)

Wednesday- Spaghetti Bolognese

Thursday = Viking Pork

Friday – Takeaway

Saturday – Pizza Pasta

Sunday – Chicken Pot pie crumble

New recipe I tried last week.

The favourite one as voted for by the family was the Smothered Pork Chops in French Onion Gravy. I found the recipe on Pinterest and it was very easy. It is a good job that I finish work earlier than I used to as the onions had to be caramelized which took over half an hour. I like to try and eat around 6.00pm during the week so we have time to enjoy the meals before any evening activities and it would have been a rush previously to cook and eat.

From the camera

It is nice to be able to get out walking without having to wrap up. We went to a local country park which has various wood sculptures around it as part of a larger sculpture trail in the area. There are no themes, I think the sculptors could choose what they wanted. Here are pictures of some of the sculptures we saw.

Looking around the house and garden

Now the weather feels like it is getting better I am hoping to get out into the garden. I have purchased a little plastic greenhouse and I would like to attempt to grow some strawberries. I have bought some peony bulbs that need planting in the ground and also oriental lily bulbs to plant in pots for a paved area that we used to have the rabbit hutch on. I need to buy more plants and bulbs, but I have yet to fully decide what I want to plant and grow. The front garden needs tidying up as the wind has blown bits of rubbish into it probably from when the bins are emptied. I also want to replace the gravel/stone area with astro turf. It used to be a planted area when we first moved in, but the window cleaner ended up damaging the plants trying to get his ladder positioned to clean the upstairs windows. I hope it will also give the front more kerb appeal as the turf will add colour.

To relax this week, I will

Start to read Mrs Miniver by Jan Struthers. As I do not have access at the moment to my craft room, I will only be working on my courthouse steps blanket as I can knit anywhere. The gardening will also be relaxing if the weather holds out at the weekend.

I will be linking up again with Sandra from Diary of a Stay at Home Mom.
